Personality:
Atlas is a very calm, quiet person. He doesn't react to things very quickly, but that doesn't mean he doesn't have his own thoughts about it. If you were to tell him some shocking news, he would remain rather indifferent on the outside, but in deep thought on the inside. He is one that likes to think about things before he talks to anyone. If you ask him a question, you might get a reply five minutes later. He likes to be sure he knows the answer before he responds, and likes to form his responses carefully. Due to this, he tends to make people think he is either stupid, or uncaring. In fact, he cares a lot about people, but doesn't like to talk without thinking about his response. Only on rare occasion will he respond without thinking first. He is a rather stoic person if someone was to just look at the surface, but his emotions are usually haywire underneath his calm exterior. Getting him to show them is very difficult and only something those that really know him can get him to show what he is feeling.
Despite being calm and quiet most of the time, Atlas is a very nice person. He will smile when he needs to and will keep a secret. He isn't the type to abandon someone when they need him or the type to leave anyone in the dust. His kind heart gets him into a lot of trouble, sometimes tied up by mercenaries or Jokers or even Rangers. Why? He tends to get himself in trouble by being 'one of the other guys'. For some reason, mercenaries thinks he is spying on them. Jokers thinks he is a Ranger and Rangers think he is a Joker. It doesn't end up well, but his employment gets him out of the trouble. Despite all this trouble, he still stays calm and doesn't think about it. He has a job to do and he will do it to the best of his ability. Even though he is a nice person, he is not beyond hurting someone to reach a goal. If his Pokemon or someone that is innocent is in danger, he will jump up to help them, even if it means killing another person or Pokemon.
History:
Atlas was born on a small island several miles from the coast of Johto. He was born to a clan of trainers that specialized in bonding instead of capturing Pokemon in a pokeball. This clan was called Eos. That wasn't their real name, of course, but the secret of the clan's name had stayed hidden from outsiders for centuries. Atlas, being the first born of one of the clan's trainers, was chosen to follow in his father's footsteps. The clan elder looked at him, and once she decided his purpose, he was allowed to stay with the clan. The children that didn't pass the exam were sent off to foster homes, away from the island, to live normal lives. Only those chosen were allowed to stay, and only those that were chosen by the scouts were allowed the chance to marry into the clan and to produce more offspring. These thoughts and this way of life is that Atlas grew up with. So he is rather unfeeling when someone ask him about his siblings. They weren't good enough to stay, so why should he worry?
From the time he could crawl, Atlas was put with the young Pokemon in the training ring. He was with the other chosen children, but he was different. He didn't cry for his mother, oh no, he wailed. Being separated from something warm that gave you food sometimes was horrible. He put up such a fuss, to the point that the elder was called in to calm him. Finally, Atlas's partner chose him. In the Eos clan, you didn't chose your Pokemon. The Pokemon chose you. And Hades chose Atlas. The Houndour calmed his crying and let the boy cling to him. The two became inseparable. It was then that the elder decided that Atlas had gained his partner from the batch of wild Pokemon brought in, so he could begin his training. Atlas and Hades were put through many test to not only strengthen, but to test their bond. When a Pokemon chooses a human, it could possibly be because the Pokemon felt bad for them. So, in order to test that, a series of trials must be run.
Atlas and Hades passed with flying colors. The two trusting each other with their lives when Atlas was only four. Age didn't mean anything to the Eos. If you could talk and walk, then you could function as part of the clan. Atlas's job was simple when he was younger: help to bring in other wild Pokemon. He worked with gaining the trust of the wild beast and drawing them into the clan's village, the Pokemon being treated well and asked to help repair things. The bond between an Eos and their Pokemon was stronger than any bond a pokeball could accomplish. So when a stranger visited the island and tried to capture a clan member's Pokemon who had wandered away for whatever reason, the capture was a sure fail and the stranger was beaten as punishment. The punishment didn't seem too severe to Atlas, knowing that if someone even tried to touch Hades, he would want them dead. Hades was the same. If anyone touched Atlas, he would rip them apart.
When Atlas was seven, he was sent away from the village as part of a routine right of passage ceremony. He was to return from traveling the world in four years with a new partner. Then their bond would be tested. Many Eos failed when they were exposed to technology and the wonders of the world outside the island, but not Atlas. He wasn't intrigued by it at all. With Hades beside him, he was content that he had all he needed. He was transferred to the Hoenn Region on the back of one of the clan leader's Salamence, then dropped off. The Region was where Atlas was to learn about bonding with Pokemon that were a lot different than the ones on the island. So he set off on his own, wearing the traditional mask to mark himself as an Eos. Anyone with any sense knew to not mess with him. Each Eos was trained as a fighter, and their Pokemon was their loyal companion. Of course, that didn't mean every person knew. He was bothered by older kids, but when Hades the Houndour chased them off, Atlas wasn't bothered again.
After two years into his journey to test himself, he met his next partner. Aphrodite. The Absol was a beautiful, lean creature that Atlas felt drawn to. Then again, he knew he was rather fond of dark Pokemon and fire Pokemon, given Hades was his first partner. The Absol didn't really trust Atlas at first, but after a year, they finally bonded. It took followed Aphrodite, hunting for food with her, caring for her wounds, and living outside near her in order to gain her trust, but Atlas was willing to wait for a partner that he could trust. He could wait for any Pokemon he felt a bond with. He was happy that he had learned patience back with the clan. Aphrodite and Atlas bonded, the Absol bonding with Hades as well. Then once the four years were up, Atlas waited in the pick up point, eleven years old and ready to go home. Once he arrived back on the island, he didn't get a moment to rest. He was forced through many more trials to test his bond with Aphrodite, and once again, his bond with Hades.
Once he passed, he was allowed to stay with the clan for many years, training there. Finally, at the age of twenty, he was ready to go onto the next right of passage ritual. This one would last eight years. His mission: discover something about his partners that he never knew and to make a new partner. Eight years seems like a lot, but it really wasn't. Not to an Eos. Atlas knew from experience that bonding with a Pokemon took years and years. He was lucky with Aphrodite, but he was a child and still held the sense of innocence to the wild Pokemon. But now? He was a human adult. Bonding might be harder, and discovering something new about his Pokemon? He knew nearly everything that the clan offered for him to learn and everything about his two partners. But orders were orders. Failure in his final test would mean his banishment from the clan and stripped of his title as an Eos.
Atlas was sent to the Kalos Region, finding out very quickly that there were parts of the world he had yet to see or learn about. While there, he was told by customs that his Pokemon needed pokeballs. Hades and Aphrodite fought tooth and nail with Atlas, but they didn't have a choice. So Atlas had to accept. He explained where he was from and what his clan did, so, the Rangers of that Region understood and gave him one more pokeball. Something he could use when he found his last partner. Atlas then went off to the wilderness, Hades now a full grown Houndoom and Aphrodite a stronger Absol. They searched and wondered for three years, until finally, they met their last family member. Ares the Blaziken. The Pokemon was torn and battered from battles and wasn't easily trusting, but Atlas wormed his way into the fire bird's heart and nestled there. Their trust is still building to this day, but for the most part, they are complete partners.
It was in Kalos, right before Atlas left to travel somewhere else, thinking that his time was up in the other Region, that he discovered something new about his Pokemon. It happened during a tough battle with a gang and their vicious Pokemon. Hades, Aphrodite, and Ares protected their master, shiny stones hanging from their necks that Atlas had gathered for them, thinking that they looked good on them. Hades was the first to evolve, his deathly howl and his sharp teeth ripping the enemies to shreds, the thick plates on his body blocking attacks, his tail slashing anything that moved. Aphrodite was next, and used her wings to smash her enemies into the ground, her uncovered eye shining in the glint of death. Then Ares was last, kicking the competition out of the playing field. Mega evolution without a mega ring, and only mega stones. Activated by a deep love between trainer and Pokemon.
Mega evolution, Atlas later learned from the Rangers in Kalos that helped him, was something that was accomplished by two stones. One that the trainer held, the other that the Pokemon held. But Atlas only had the one stones for his Pokemon to wear. The Rangers were confused, especially since the Pokemon didn't change back. They removed the stones and did all they could, but it seemed that the three were stuck in their new forms. For good. Atlas didn't understand at the time, but he later learned that permanent mega evolution was possible with a strong bond and a deep love. Something that was rather rare, and a process that was sparked to save him. To protect him. That proved that Ares trusted and loved Atlas as much as Aphrodite and Hades.
Atlas moved away from the Kalos Region with his little team, to the Phoenix Region. Twenty seven, and one year left. Once the year was up, he was to send a messenger to his clan and go back home. Back home to the small village he grew up on, and get judged. It was something Atlas both longed for and dreaded. If he failed the trials and answering the one question he was told to find an answer to, then he would be kicked out and marked a failure.
